GCSE results day is finally here, and thousands of students across the country have been celebrating some tremendous results.

Despite fears over the difficulty of exams this year, students in London have surged further ahead of the rest of the country and it is still the best performing region in the UK.

This year, 25.7 per cent of London students received the top grades — at least a 7 — up from 25.2 per cent last year. These were the best London results in the A or higher category since 2011 when 26.8 per cent received a top grade.

But it's not just the capital that's celebrating - top grades have risen for the second year in row after nearly 21% of all entries scored one of the three top grades this year.

The proportion receiving the top grades - at least a 7 or an A grade - is the highest since 2015 and marks the second year-on-year rise in a row.
