SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party secured its hold of Aljunied GRC for a third term following the General Election (GE) on Friday (10 July).

The WP team won 59.93 per cent of the votes in the GRC, surpassing its previous wins at 50.96 per cent in GE2015 and 54.72 per cent in GE2011.

During the election campaigning, many have wondered if the new WP team can secure the hotly contested GRC, after former chief Low Thia Khiang and Chen Show Mao stepped down before the GE.

Led by WP secretary-general Pritam Singh, who took over the party leadership in 2018 from Low, the leading opposition party’s team for the GRC also comprised incumbents Sylvia Lim and Muhamad Faisal Manap, and former Non-Constituency Members of Parliament Gerald Giam and Leon Perera.

The People’s Action Party (PAP) team for the GRC consisted of Victor Lye, Shamsul Kamar, Chan Hui Yuh, Chua Eng Leong and Alex Yeo, which garnered 40.07 per cent of the votes.
