General Election 2024: Rugby candidates as incumbent Mark Pawsey steps down

It’s all change for Rugby in the 2024 General Election as long-serving incumbent Mark Pawsey is stepping down. Mr Pawsey has represented the constituency since 2010 and said it has been ‘an honour’ to serve as the town’s MP.

His father Jim Pawsey served as the town’s MP from 1979 to 1997, when the constituency, then known as Rugby and Kenilworth, was won by Labour.

Yousef Dahmash is now taking on the mantle of defending the seat for the Conservatives at the upcoming election. You can see a full list of candidates for this constituency at the bottom of the article.

And Rugby could be one to watch in July. In recent political history residents have voted in line with national trends, with the seat - albeit with slightly different boundaries - being won by Labour in 1997 when Tony Blair took power and regained by the Conservatives in 2010 under David Cameron.

In that time Mr Pawsey increased his majority, returning 29,255 votes out of a 72,292-strong electorate in 2019 - 57.6 per cent of the total vote.

The Rugby constituency covers the town of Rugby itself along with Bilton, Hillmorton and Clifton-upon-Dunsmore as well as the rural area to the east of Coventry including Harborough Magna, Wolston, Brinklow and Bulkington.
