General election 2019: Which candidates are standing in my area today?

Today’s general election promises to be one of the most dramatic polls in a generation, after a fierce campaign dominated by rhetoric over Brexit and the NHS crisis.

Almost 70 different parties have candidates forward for the election as Labour, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats battle to hold the balance of power.

If you have yet to decide which party to vote for, here is how to find out which candidates are standing in your area.

Who are my candidates for the general election?

You can find a list of candidates in your constituency by visiting the Electoral Commission website and entering your postcode.

Alternatively, you can visit the website Who Can I Vote For? which provides information about each party’s manifesto.

More than 3,300 candidates are standing for election across the UK’s 650 constituencies.

The Conservatives are contesting seats in 635 constituencies, more than any other party, while Labour are standing in 631.

Smaller parties, novelty groups and independent candidates may also be on your ballot paper.

How do I find my local polling station?

Your polling card will include the name of your constituency and the address of your polling station. You cannot vote at any other location.

If you are eligible to vote but have not received your polling card, you can contact your local Electoral Registration Office.

Polling stations will be open between 7am and 10pm on Thursday. You will not need to bring photo ID unless you live in Northern Ireland.

You can apply for an emergency proxy vote until 5pm if an emergency means you cannot get to the polling station in person.
