George Michael inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

George Michael has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The late pop legend received over a million votes to be inducted, just beating out Cyndi Lauper in the fan-voted poll.

Michael's induction comes on the 40th anniversary Wham's debut album Fantastic which will be celebrated with a re-release and Netflix documentary later this year.

The singer-songwriter is one of the best selling musicians of all time, shifting over 100 million records in his lifetime.

He achieved seven UK number one singles and 8 number ones in the US including Faith, Careless Whisper and Father Figure.

Michael died on Christmas Day 2016 at the age of 53.

Other artists inducted this year include British pop legend Kate Bush, rapper Missy Elliott, country icon Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, rap-rock group Rage Against the Machine, soul singer Chaka Khan, lyricist Bernie Taupin, hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc and R&B group The Spinners.

A number of noteworthy nominees did not make the final list including The White Stripes, Joy Division, New Order and rap group A Tribe Called Quest.

Bush's nomination spurred controversy after one voter confessed to not being familiar with her music. The Wuthering Heights singer was a major star in the UK but not as mainstream in the US.

The comments were criticised by Courtney Love who tweeted: "Bro! The rest of us have been LIVING KATE BUSH since 1977! Too much power in the hands of IDIOTS."

Joy Division – one of the most popular and influential British bands of all time – were similarly never popular in the US, harming their chances of being inducted.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in New York in November.
