George Zimmerman Hurt As Shot Fired At Truck

George Zimmerman, the man cleared of shooting dead unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, has been injured in a dispute involving a firearm in Florida.

Lake Mary Police said the 31-year-old suffered minor injuries from flying glass after a bullet was fired at a window of his car following an altercation with another man.

A police spokeswoman told journalists that the former neighbourhood watch volunteer had flagged down an officer following the incident.

"He reported that he had just been involved in a shooting," she said.

"At this time the investigation has proven that George Zimmerman was not the shooter.

"We cannot determine at this time whether or not charges will be filed for either party."

The alleged gunman, Matthew Apperson, also reported the incident to police.

Last September, Mr Apperson accused Zimmerman of threatening to kill him during a confrontation in their vehicles.

Earlier, Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, said a motorist pulled up alongside Zimmerman's truck on the motorway and fired a single shot into the vehicle.

He said the bullet went through the passenger-side window and narrowly missed Zimmerman's head before it lodged in the roof.

A witness told Orlando television station WESH-TV that Zimmerman walked to an ambulance without help from police or medics.

Mr West told Fox News he did not know what occurred prior to the shooting.

Zimmerman has had several brushes with the law since his controversial 2013 acquittal for the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon a year earlier. The case sparked protests and a national debate about race.

In January he was arrested for allegedly throwing a bottle of wine at his girlfriend and last September a Florida driver said Zimmerman threatened to kill him.

In 2013, his then-wife Shellie Zimmerman accused her husband of threatening her and her father with a gun.

He was detained again later that year after former girlfriend Samantha Scheibe said he pointed a gun at her face in a row.

Charges were either dropped or not pursued because of a lack of evidence in those cases.
