PETE THAMEL: For the Georgia Bulldogs, the wait is over. After 41 years, Georgia has won its first national championship since Herschel Walker delivered the trophy back in 1980. Number 3 Georgia defeated number 1 Alabama, 33-18, to give Kirby Smart his first championship as a head coach. It did not come without a little drama to match the week.

Georgia didn't score a touchdown for the game's first 43 minutes. And they proceeded over the last 17 to score four touchdowns, including back-to-back drives led by Stetson Bennett after a controversial fumble gave Alabama the lead in the fourth quarter. And maybe the biggest plot twist? Heisman winner Bryce Young sealed the game for Georgia with a pick 6.

Kelee Ringo's 79-yard return of a young interception was the final score. And it gave Georgia back to back to back touchdowns to close out the fourth quarter over the final eight minutes. And it left Stetson Bennett 17 of 26 for 224 yards and two touchdowns as the game's offensive MVP. The former walked on. The son of Blackshear delivered Kirby Smart, the son of Bainbridge, Georgia's first title in over four decades. This is Pete Thamel for Yahoo Sports where Georgia is your 2021 national champ.
