Former Manchester United defender and Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has urged Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to decide whether or not Erik ten Hag is the right manager for the next few years rather than just the final year of his contract.

Ten Hag entered the FA Cup final under extreme pressure after finishing eighth in the Premier League. Early exits from the Champions League and the Carabao Cup also stacked the odds against the Dutchman.

However, after leading United to a 2-1 win over Manchester City, opinion among the fanbase has shifted and supporters are keen for Ten Hag to keep his job at Old Trafford. MEN Sport understands no decision is imminent on the future of the Dutchman and the club is likely to announce the outcome of their end-of-season review next week.

Ahead of that decision, Pique has told talkSPORT that INEOS should be looking long-term with Ten Hag when concluding whether he stays or goes. "I think that the board of United really needs to understand what they want for the club in the next few years and really if they believe in Ten Hag or not.

"They need to make the decision. Well, it’s tough to say really [if he should leave or not] because it’s true that they won the cup.

"At the same time, it’s also true that they are not fighting for the Premier League which I think at some point, has to be one of the objectives of Manchester United." Ten Hag went on holiday on Sunday and claimed before he left that he had received no indication as to the decision Ratcliffe will make.
