A conscientious German man has received an outpouring of support from Scots after taking to social media platform Reddit to ask if it was OK for him to wear a kilt to his upcoming wedding.

Writing on the r/Scotland forum, a user called Bugglerop said: "I'm a German and I've visited Scotland for the first time last year. I've fallen in love with your country even more than I had before. I bought a kilt second-hand when I visited to wear at renaissance fairs, etc., and just because its awesome.

"This week, my wedding is coming up. At first I had an outfit with white pants and a green vest, but after I exchanged the pants for the kilt, it just looks so much better.

"My fiancée begs me to wear the kilt, but I am unsure. I feel like it is not my place to wear this as I am not Scottish."

He finished his post by saying: "It feels weird, as if I'm asking for permission or (something). I'm rather curious about opinions on this. How do people feel about non‐Scots wearing kilts?"

His question went viral on the platform, with almost 350 replies so far.

It seems that Bugglerop needn't have worried, as the vast majority of the comments were positive and supportive of his request.

The top comment under the post said: "Not a single Scot is going to care a guy in Germany wore a kilt to their wedding. It's your day. You do you.

"But if it puts your mind at ease I hereby grant you permission to wear a kilt to your wedding."

Another person added: "Absolutely no issue whatsoever. I personally love when people embrace our culture it makes me feel patriotic and proud to be Scottish."

One longer and more considered response went into more detail about the claims of cultural appropriation: "Obviously I don't know which bit of Germany you're from, but say that I got a pair of lederhosen," said the Reddit user. "You could see I wasn't taking the p**s, but genuinely enjoyed wearing them.

"Would that make you feel like I was culturally appropriating? Or culturally appreciating? Wouldn't you LIKE seeing someone from another culture genuinely enjoying yours too and wanting to share in that? Hopefully you would...a kilt isn't something we wear all the time, but it makes us happy to see others enjoy it as well.

"Wear it, rock it, and make your fiancée into a very happy lady by wearing it too."

It wasn't just men who responded, either. Several women also took the time to comment, with one writing: "(It's) cultural appreciation and I love it!! From a Scottish lass, enjoy your wedding day wearing a kilt, best wishes to you and your fiancé!"

Here here. Let's hope they also end the wedding by playing Loch Lomond by Runrig, for the full, authentic Scottish experience.
