It comes as the World Health Organization branded the newly named Omicron variant, also called B.1.1.529, a "variant of concern", putting it in the same category as the Delta variant which has spread quickly throughout the world. The rapid spread of Delta is current responsible for sending some countries in Europe back into lockdown.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is holding a press conference at Downing Street at 5pm on Saturday, following the discovery of two cases of the Covid-19 Omicron variant in the UK. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the cases were linked and the two people were self-isolating alongside their households while more tests and contact tracing take place. Sajid Javid told BBC News: “Today I can announce one thing that we are doing immediately is carrying out targeted testing and sequencing of positive cases in the two areas that are affected.”

Christmas lights have been turned on in Madrid, Spain, in a ceremony that saw fireworks light up the night sky. The ceremony to switch on the lights took place in the Plaza de España. At the meeting point of Plaza España and Gran Vía, an 18m (59 feet)-high Christmas tree is adorned with 800 coloured balls, 200 candies and 150 luminous strings of lights that in total are over 1,800m in length, with 27,000 points of light. Lidl GB has promoted Ryan McDonnell to be its next chief executive, with Christian Härtnagel leaving the role to lead the discounter’s Germany division. The GB arm of the grocer, which this week revealed its target for 1100 stores by the end of 2025, said McDonnell will start in his new role on February 1. Proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Service (ISS) recommended shareholders support Royal Dutch Shell's plan to move its head office from the Netherlands to Britain, according to a document seen by Reuters. Shell said this month it would scrap its dual Anglo-Dutch share structure and move its head office to London from The Hague due to the Dutch tax system and after a court ruling over its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "The Company has provided compelling rationale which explains the benefits of the simplification of its share structure," ISS said in a note.
