Giant Python Slithers Across Road in Everglades National Park

A group of wildlife photographers pulled over to record and report a large Burmese python seen in Florida’s Everglades National Park on Monday, January 2.

Video recorded by Kymberly Clark shows the python slither from the middle of the road into a grass bank. Clark told Storyful that she and her friends had pulled over to document the animal and report it to authorities for extermination. Pythons are invasive species to Florida and have dramatically affected mammal populations in Everglades National Park according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Clark said she and her friends estimated the snake was 15 feet long, approaching the maximum size for a Burmese python.

“I have received a lot of comments that I should have tried to kill it, but it is dangerous and even difficult for the most experienced snake hunters with guns and special equipment. We did what we could by documenting it on film, pinning the location and reporting it to the authorities. " she said.

Clark told Storyful that it was the second time she had come across a python in the region in recent months.

“In less than two months, my friends and I have seen two pythons in the Everglades. I think that is incredible because we are not in the Everglades that frequently. It’s a 2 and half hour ride from where we live,” she said. Credit: Kymberly Clark via Storyful
