Gillian Anderson could be set to take on the Iron Lady.

According to the Daily Mail, the X Files star is in the frame to play former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the forthcoming series of The Crown.

A source told the paper: “Gillian is an excellent actress, so it would be a real coup to get her.”

The way ahead for Anderson could be smoothed considerably by the fact that her partner is Peter Morgan, the writer and producer behind the hit Netflix show.

Thatcher’s character will reportedly appear towards the end of the fourth season of the series, as she takes up leadership of the Conservative Party.

She would join a increasingly impressive new cast, as the action moves into the latter half of the 1960s with the younger cast including Claire Foy and Matt Smith being replaced by older actors.

Olivia Colman will become Queen Elizabeth II, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

Season three, which is currently filming, will also introduce the characters of Camilla Parker Bowles and Princess Diana, who will be the focal point of the fourth series.

Though a transmission date has not been confirmed, it will likely arrive in early 2019.
