You might want to put that hot cup of coffee down, because the future of Gilmore Girls over on Netflix is looking more uncertain than ever.

And the reason lies in Amazon's rival streaming service.

Yep, Amazon announced today (September 25) that Gilmore Girls creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have signed a multi-year deal with Amazon Studios.

The first new series coming from the duo is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, due to debut this autumn on Prime Video, and we're excited and all, but the biggest question is: what about Lorelai and Rory?

That little word "overall" is telling, and considering a follow-up to A Year in the Life was never officially nailed down with Netflix, we don't imagine one will be coming any time soon.

Lorelai Gilmore herself threw cold water on any rumours of a second (or ninth) season on Netflix earlier this year, admitting that they will never be able to "please everybody".

"Would I do it on Netflix again? Sure, but there are people that have better objectivity than I with saying what is best for the show," Lauren Graham said.

Even if some people aren't pleased, Lauren definitely is, recently calling the show a world that she 'believes in and is thrilled by'.

"I will never have a happier day at work as I had over the years on this show or is something that is [such] a fit," she added.

Gilmore Girls is available to stream on Netflix. For now.
