Gina Miller raises £300,000 after pledging 'biggest tactical vote in history' to stop hard Brexit

Gina Miller, the pro-EU campaigner who mounted a successful court challenge against Article 50, has raised over £300,000 after establishing a crowdfunding page to prevent ‘an extreme Brexit’.

Last week, the millionaire businesswoman set up a GoFundMe campaign to ‘back candidates who pledge to support a full and free vote on the Brexit deal’ at the forthcoming General Election on June 8.

Now, she’s raised £300,000 for the campaign – smashing an initial target of £100,000.

Responding to supporters directly, she wrote: ‘To everyone that has so generously donated – a huge thank you, this is an amazing response!

‘I want to make sure we use these funds strategically and some comments from donors have suggested that we put some towards getting people registered to vote.

‘Be assured this will be one of our aims so we achieve our goal of facilitating the biggest tactical voting effort in our history.’

She has also launched a new pressure group called Best for Britain, which aims to keep politicians accountable during Brexit negotiations.

She said: ‘If the deal the next government negotiates doesn’t match up to our current terms, MPs should do what’s best for Britain and reject it. We will be asking MPs to pledge to keep an open mind and not be bullied into giving the next government a blank cheque for the final deal.’

Mrs Miller previously secured a High Court victory in January, after it was ruled that Brexit must be approved by parliament. The subsequent vote was held in March and the Lords voted in favour.
