Girl, 13, falls into river before school and has to cling to a boulder

A teenage girl had a lucky escape after falling into a river in Aberdare. The girl, who is believed to be 13, fell into a stretch of the River Cynon near Aberdare Community School at approximately 8.45am on Tuesday (June 18).

A spokesman for South Wales Police said she managed to hold on to a boulder in the river before officers arrived and pulled her to safety. The girl had been in the water for around 15-minutes before being rescued and taken to safety.

The spokesman said: "She was checked over by an ambulance crew and we can confirm she suffered no injuries."

Fire crews were also called to the scene on Tuesday morning. A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they received a call at around 8.44am that a 13-year-old girl had fallen into the river near the Ynys Playing Fields, Aberdare.

Crews from Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare attended, along with boats and rescue tenders from Malpas and Ebbw Vale.

The spokeswoman added: "The girl was rescued from the water using specialist water equipment."
