'It's a Girl': Rare Black Rhino Calf Born at Australian Zoo

A zoo in Australia celebrated the birth of a critically endangered black rhino calf early on Wednesday, February 24.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo said keepers arrived at work on Wednesday to find the female calf standing beside her mother Bakhita in the zoo’s calving yard.

CCTV footage shared by the zoo shows the calf and mother.

“This is the fourth calf for experienced mother Bakhita, who is the zoo’s most successful black rhino breeding female and also the first female black rhino born here,” zoo director Steve Hinks said.

Black rhinos are currently listed as critically endangered with estimates that there are less than 6,000 remaining in the wild, the zoo said. Credit: Taronga Western Plains Zoo via Storyful
