Women of a certain age aren’t well-represented on television, which is something screenwriter and director Kay Mellor hopes to change.
Her new series, Girlfriend,s follows three women over 50 as they negotiate the dramas, disappointments and delights of ageing.

What’s it about?
Girlfriends revolves around the lives of three women over fifty. Linda, Sue and Gail are old friends who have grown apart, only to be brought back together when Linda’s husband vanishes on a cruise ship on their wedding anniversary.
Alongside supporting their devastated pal, Sue and Gail have plenty of their own problems spanning everything from caring for elderly parents and tackling grown-up kids to dealing with ageism at work.
Who’s in the cast?
The series stars three big home-grown British TV talents. Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan is the unlucky Linda, Churchill star Miranda Richardson is the glamorous Sue, and My Family and Harry Potter actress Zoe Wanamaker plays the defiant Sue.

Kay Mellor is an esteemed British screenwriter, director and actress who has created hit TV shows including Fat Friends and In the Club, as well as Love, Lies & Records which is currently airing on BBC One.
