Giro d'Italia 2019 stage one preview: Route, map, time trial start times and TV info for Grande Partenza in Bologna

The 2019 Giro d'Italia begins in Bologna today with an individual time trial, as is often the case in Grand Tours, but this is a time trial with a difference.

At only 8km this is a very short stage, but it will be testing, with six relatively flat kilometres before a sharp 2km incline to the finish at San Luca.

While the time trial specialists will have the chance to earn the maglia rosa, the more punchy climbers will be able to minimise their losses in the finale.

Expect Tom Dumoulin to be fast out of the blocks setting the early marker for the rest to chase. Riders like Primoz Roglic, Bob Jungels and Victor Campenaerts could challenge, while Simon Yates and Vincenzo NIbali will just be hoping to minimise any losses.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the Giro d'Italia's opening stage:

Stage one route

The opening stage of this Giro begins in the centre of Bologna, and heads west towards San Luca on the outskirts of the city.
