Gironde Moves to Red Alert as Thousands Evacuated From Southwest France Fires

As wildfires burned near Guillos, Landiras, and La Teste-de-Buch, the Department of Gironde in southwest France placed the area on red-alert status on July 14.

Footage by K’RPTV shows what was called the “sad view” from the lakeshore at Port de Navarrosse as smoke fills the sky.

The local government said on July 15 that 7,500 hectares, or about 18,500 acres, had been burned, and more than 11,300 people evacuated. The Directorate General for Civil Security and Crisis Management said on Twitter that more than 1,000 firefighters were working to fight the blazes. Credit: K’RPTV via Storyful
