Gladiator 2 would have brought Maximus back to life

Ridley Scott is currently doing the press rounds for Alien: Covenant, and among all the bits about how saying this new film is going to be the best in the series (lies, Alien 3 is the best), the director revealed something very interesting about a proposed Gladiator sequel.

German movie magazine Me.Movies uploaded a video of them asking Ridley about the rumours that Nick Cave (yes, the Nick Cave) had written a script where Russell Crowe's hero Maximus comes back to life – and it's true.

Ridley reveals that Cave wrote the script because Crowe is good mates with the 'Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue)' hitmaker, and the director was actually impressed with the idea of undoing one of the best endings of all time.

So how would you bring Maximus back to the realm of the living? "A portal," says Ridley, because OF COURSE, that totally fits within the tone of the original.

We think interviewer Daniel Krüger's incredible reactions sum up this whole scenario best:

Luckily for, well, everyone, Ridley said Russell Crowe was getting on a bit, which we guess he can get away with.

He also said that the script is currently sitting on a shelf somewhere at DreamWorks and has been there for the last ten or so years, where it BELONGS.

We all remember the last time a film series begun by Ridley Scott tried resurrecting its main character, and it wasn't pretty.

That was just the worst, wasn't it?
