The show has proved to be a quick hit with fans too, with a reported 8.7 million viewers tuning in to watch its first episode.

Past Gladiators have previously expressed their interest in returning to the show, including Wolf, 71, who said after the reboot was announced that he was still "fit enough" to appear on the programme but he believed that he'd be seen as too old to do so.

Instead, Wolf - real name Michael Van Wijk - said that his son Dean has applied for a position on the show instead. In November 2022, he told the Daily Star: "I can't imagine anyone being the new Wolf expect my son Dean.

"He has the same sense of humour and sharp wit that will tear the contenders to pieces. He not only looks like me but is a super athletic as well."

Wolf and Dean made an appearance on Good Morning Britain in December 2022 to discuss the possibility of Dean being on the show, with Wolf adding: “To be honest with you and I’m being perfectly honest with you, I could do all of the games comfortably.

“And any new ones they had. It’s just your commitment to a level of fitness and you know you can do it.”

Ultimately, Wolf's son Dean hasn't appeared on the show just yet with his father telling the Radio Times that he was "a bit sad my son isn’t taking part, which I would’ve loved. He’s a superb athlete and the spitting image of me. I thought it might add a nice layer to have Wolf’s son."

With many people calling newcomer Viper the reboot's new Wolf, Van Wijk said: "I’m just a bit sad my son isn’t taking part, which I would’ve loved. He’s a superb athlete and the spitting image of me. I thought it might add a nice layer to have Wolf’s son."

He also told the outlet he "wouldn't mind" a cameo on the series in the future.

The BBC's Gladiators final takes place this Saturday, 30 March on BBC One and iPlayer.
