A local artist is making a statement in the Glasgow fashion scene with her newly launched studio store at the Barras Market.

Hannah Johnstone is a flourishing artist and designer originally from Cumbernauld, now living in the city. The 29-year-old was an abstract artist, making interior pieces for various clients however, decided to bite the bullet and become the face of her own brand.

She is now the founder of hannah christina studio, a wearable art store located in the vibrant Barras Market. Hannah takes pre-loved jackets and creates uniquely designed, and hand-painted wearable art.

Hannah said the inspiration came off the back of realising that the art world was unaffordable. "It was the last thing on people's mind, especially in this current financial climate. I wanted to put my art on a product that's affordable and available to everyone.", she explained.

Her pieces are all unique with not one item being the same as she hand paints them individually and always adds that "personal touch".

She added: "Everyone wants an individual one off piece, that's where the idea of upcycling pre-loved clothing came from".

Hannah prefers to focus on leather jackets where she buys from pre-owned websites such as eBay and Vinted. Each jacket is individually designed and hand painted - sometimes taking up to three weeks to complete. Each piece ranges in price starting at around £100 to £150.

The studio store opened its doors on Saturday, April 27, with one of Hannah's jackets already making it to one of the world's biggest red carpet events - the Cannes Film Festival!

Hannah made the leap and became her own boss, realising she wanted to be the face of her own brand and be able to interact with customers - the store is open every Saturday, Sunday, 10am - 4pm. She said: "I wanted to be the face of the brand. I wanted to tell people my story and tell them how I create the jackets and all the background. It's important for me to be in the studio so I can interact with customers - the hours work well with me, it means I can use my Monday to Friday getting the jackets ready".

None of Hannah's items have a size as she believes that "if it feels good, it looks good" and wants no customer to be "categorised to a size".

The young artist said she takes a lot of her inspiration from the famous Jackson Pollock, who is widely known for his 'drip technique'.

The studio has received great feedback in its first five weeks with over 100 jackets sold, Hannah even says some customers are returning. She believes the Barras Market is a great location for such a brand - mixing creatives and locals.

Last weekend, Hannah proudly supported Scottish Action for Mental Health and raised £400 after 20% of each bag sold went to SAMH.

Hannah feels "incredibly proud" of herself however, admits to feeling "overwhelmed" following such a great response.

Hannah is taking the Glasgow fashion scene by storm, creating never seen before pieces and bringing something totally unique to the city. She hopes her studio store is a step in the right direction to tackling fast fashion and is passionate that sustainability is the way forward.

You can visit hannah christina studio every Saturday, Sunday from 10am - 4pm at the Barras Market in Glasgow.
