Glasgow costume designer on BBC The One Show as spotlight shone on Scottish drag scene

A Glasgow-based costume designer is set to be featured on BBC's The One Show.

Local designer Gillian MacDonald, the brains behind the brand Gillie Jean King, will be showcased in an upcoming mini-documentary on tonight's (November 19) episode of The One Show. The segment will explore her journey as a costume designer and highlight her contributions to the Scottish drag scene.

Gillian will be interviewed by drag performer and BBC presenter Jamie Grandison, offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at her creative process as she crafts a bespoke outfit for Miss Peaches, a prominent figure in Scottish drag.

The 32-year-old launched her business Gillie Jean King three years ago and has quickly become a sought-after designer in the drag and performance community.

With an undergraduate degree in Fashion Business from Glasgow Caledonian University and a Master’s degree in Fashion and Textiles from Heriot-Watt University, Macdonald combines her academic background with a passion for vibrant, intricate costume design.

Her work has caught the attention of high-profile clients, including RuPaul's Drag Race UK Season 2 winner Lawrence Chaney, who Gillian created a number of striking looks for in preparation for the RuPaul’s Drag Race Live show in Las Vegas. Other notable clients include singer Natasha Bedingfield, drag artist Charra Tea, and cosplay artist and social media personality, Emily Wallbank.

Speaking of the mini-documentary, Gillian said: "I'm excited to share my story on The One Show, especially through an interview with Jamie Grandison, whose connection to both myself and the drag scene brings a special understanding to the conversation.

"It's an honour to be creating a custom outfit for Miss Peaches, and I'm thrilled to showcase the vibrant talent and creativity that the Scottish drag scene has to offer."

The documentary will take viewers inside Gillian’s workshop, where she brings her designs to life, focusing on the creation of a custom designed performance piece for Miss Peaches.

In just three years, Gillian has dressed a range of prominent clients, making her a go-to designer in the drag and performance scene in Scotland. Her custom pieces have graced stages across the UK and beyond.

The mini-documentary is set to air on tonight's episode BBC's The One Show at 7pm.
