Glasgow firefighters 'blown away' by family's response after blaze at well-known business
Firefighters who extinguished a blaze which threatened a well-known family business in Glasgow’s east end say they’ve been ‘blown away’ by the owners’ response.
As a way of giving back to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews who responded to a recent fire at A.S. Scaffolding, the business has donated to two key charities that support fire service members and their loved ones.
SFRS Group Commander Barrie McCutcheon said while battling the blaze was business as usual for crews, the family’s generous act was anything but.
“They were really appreciative that we got there and got it under control so quickly and asked how they could give back straight away,” he said.

“When they said, ‘I want to give you £5,000’ my jaw dropped - when I told the other crews, they couldn’t believe it either.
“I’ve been in the fire service for 25 years and I was blown away. It was really nice to see the appreciation for what we do and that recognition for the crews.”
The SFRS Family Support Trust and Fire Fighters Charity, which provide bespoke support to fire service members and their families during times of illness, bereavement or hardship, each received £2,500.
“Both charities provide fantastic support to firefighters and their families in times of need. Having worked with the Family Support Trust recently, I’ve seen the good work they do and the difference this donation will make,” Mr McCutcheon said.
A.S. Scaffolding owner Andy Smillie said making the donation was a small gesture to show their gratitude for the work of the firefighters on site.
“The fire in the shed was spreading quickly and within minutes of us calling SFRS, crews arrived,” he said.
“We haven’t seen firefighters in action before and they had it under control within 10-15 minutes - it was unbelievable and reassuring to know if we ever needed them again, they’d be there.
“We’re so glad we’ve been able to work with Barrie to help support these two fantastic charities and show our thanks to the firefighters.”
