Glasgow Pavilion Theatre upgrade including bigger bar gets green light
Plans to upgrade Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre to make it “more pleasant" to visitors — which include a bigger bar — have been given the green light.
The owners, Trafalgar Entertainment, want to redevelop the basement area of the Renfield Street venue, making it “more in-keeping with the rest of the theatre”.
Council planners have granted listed building consent for the work, which would see part of a separating wall between the bar and a corridor removed.

Trafalgar Entertainment took over the Pavilion, which opened in 1904 and has a capacity of almost 1,450, in April last year.
Its application stated: “As the theatre moves forward under new ownership, it remains a beacon of entertainment, maintaining its commitment to high-quality performances while embracing the changes that lie ahead.”
Architects were commissioned with the “aim of improving the overall patron experience”.
The basement bar will be extended into the corridor by widening the threshold between the two spaces. Storage areas near the new bar will also be widened to allow for a beer cellar.
Current seating in the basement will be stripped out but redesigned to sit facing the bar area.
In a report, planners stated: “Whilst it would be desirable to retain the terrazzo flooring, this is currently in a generally poor condition and its loss is not considered to significantly impact upon the existing character of the building due to its location under the main auditorium.
“The proposal intends to better cater and accommodate patrons, therefore assisting in increasing comfort and usability of the venue, and ensuring the continued use of the cultural building into the future.”
They added removal of a structural wall will need a building warrant.
A heritage report stated the proposed works will “maintain and preserve original features identified to be of significance and interest”.
