Glasgow police crackdown on shoplifting in city centre as two arrested

Officers in Glasgow carried are working to crackdown on shoplifting and retail crime in the city centre.

On Tuesday, November 26 local officers, supported by Retailers Against Crime, carried out warrant checks targeting prolific offenders throughout the city centre.

A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a theft from a premises at St Enoch Square and a 24-year-old man was charged in connection with a theft from a premises on Buchanan Street. Both men will be reported.

Chief Inspector John McCartin said: “This action is an excellent example of how we work closely with partners in the retail and business sectors in the city centre to deter, prevent and investigate retail crime.

“We now have a team of crime prevention officers, headed by a Sergeant, dedicated to targeting the shoplifting in the city. The team, supported as needed by other community officers, will continue to work with retailers across every area in the city centre, from small corner shops to multi-national supermarkets and be the point of contact to assist should retailers have a issue that requires their attention. That also includes providing up-to-date crime-busting material and advice, and sharing best practice.

“If you are experiencing issues with shoplifting, please do get in touch with us as we use all the information we receive to respond where and when appropriate. Every week, our officers are making arrests in relation to shoplifting and bringing those responsible to justice, and will continue to do so.

“We would encourage those employed within the retail sector to come forward and report any criminal activity, with the assurance all reports will be thoroughly investigated."

Speaking on behalf of Retailers Against Crime, a national not for profit crime partnership, National Operations Manager Stephanie Karte said: "The aim of the day of action is to target the most prolific retail crime offenders in the area by working in partnership with Police Scotland, our members and associates.

"During the course of the day we aim to detect, prevent, disrupt and divert prolific offenders through this targeted approach which is replicated quarterly within Glasgow City Centre.

"Previous days of action have been a great success resulting in individuals being deterred and arrested who are wanted by police. This in turn builds relationships between the retailers and Police Scotland and helps to keep the public safe in the city."
