Glasgow residents report 'chemical smell' from building as fire crews race to late night drama
Firefighters raced to a tenement building in the city centre late Monday night (November 25) after reports of a "chemical smell".
An eyewitness described seeing "at least a dozen fire engines, response cars and ambulances" on High Street in Merchant City, close to the junction with George Street. The Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed it was called to reports of a "chemical smell from a building" at 11.20pm.
Specialist fire service resources were sent to the four-story tenement building. Firefighters found a burning smell coming from an electrical junction box on the second floor.

Images from the scene show at least three fire engines on the scene, as well as ambulances. Police Scotland confirmed officers also attended.
Firefighters said they left the scene after handing over to Scottish Power. Glasgow Live has approached Scottish Power for more information.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11.20pm on Monday, November 25 to reports of a chemical smell coming from a building at High Street, Glasgow.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and specialist resources to a four-storey tenement building where there was a burning smell coming from an electrical junction box on the second floor.
“There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene after leaving the incident in the hands of Scottish Power.”
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said, “Our engineers attended a property on High Street in the early hours of the morning in relation to a smell of burning. We carried out the necessary replacement of a fuse, which resolved the issue.”
