Kind-hearted pupils at a primary school in the southside have raised hundreds of pounds for a worthy cause.

Primary 4 students at The Glasgow Academy Newlands carried out a series of fundraising events including a funky footwear Friday, a class bakery on European Day of Languages and a collection at Newlands South Church at the school’s Nativity service.

Pupils also wore green to support the environment. They have raised a total of £1,000 for their chosen charity - Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS).

They decided to support 'Scotland’s largest health charity' after learning about healthy living and the body in school.

The Head of The Glasgow Academy Newlands, Ali MacLeod said: "The P4 children were very excited about choosing a charity to support and when we discussed important parts of the body during a topic lesson, an overwhelming majority said brain and heart.

“We soon came across the CHSS website and the rest is history. Newlands Nursery also joined in with the fundraising, so a big thank you to the children, staff and families there."

Louise MacLeod, Community, Events and Corporate Fundraiser for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland picked up the cheque from pupils recently at their Harvest Assembly.

She said: "We want to say a massive thank you to the pupils, teachers and parents of The Glasgow Academy for your phenomenal fundraising for CHSS.

"The funds raised will help us to support the 1 in 5 people across the country who are living with chest, heart and stroke conditions and Long Covid to live their lives to the full."
