Glasgow's 'biggest' Asian supermarket approved on site of former east end Tesco
The site of a former Tesco store in the east end of the city is to be turned into the city's largest Asian market after getting the green light from planners.
Longdan (Home of Asia) submitted plans earlier this year to convert the massive 10,000 sqm Forge Retail Park unit into a speciality supermarket and food court. The brand previously said that the store would create an estimated 300 full and part-time jobs.
Under the proposals, half of the building is to be given over to the sale of speciality ingredients for Asian cuisine as well as organic and plant-based products. It will be open seven days a week between 8am and 10pm.

On top of that, a 200-seat food court with 20 dedicated food offers and two restaurants is to be built. The food court would be open 10am to 10pm, seven days a week - it will also have space for events such as parties and celebrations.
An area of the building will also be given over to wholesale and distribution, according to plans approved by Glasgow City Council.
Their decision reads: “The proposed development is considered to bring suitable new uses to the subject unit
and wider Forge Retail Park, providing spaces that are complementary to the main retail use and that will bring in more users. The proposed development will utilise an existing vacant unit, bringing it back into use and creating job opportunities.”
Longdan, who is the largest Asian retailer in the UK with 13 stores, said in a statement submitted to planners: “The purpose of this project is to build a one-stop destination for Asian goods and services in Glasgow.
“Whether it be groceries, dining or entertainment, the premises will provide a place for the Scottish public to experience a harmonious fusion of Asian culture and Scottish products.
“The restaurants and stores are dedicated to preserving Asian traditional values while elevating their elegance.”
