Glasgow's notorious Bellgrove homeless hostel set to be demolished

The notorious Bellgrove Hotel in Glasgow is set to be partially demolished and turned into housing.

Glasgow City Council has confirmed the disposal of the land in the city's Gallowgate to Wheatley Homes Glasgow. This will allow 'progress on the delivery of regeneration' in the areas, reports Glasgow Live.

A Daily Record campaign to have the place shut down previously exposed 'stinking pools of vomit and urine on the floor' of the hostel.

In 2014, we exposed how the owners were earning £1.5million a year in housing benefit, despite the homeless tenants having to live in squalor.

The last 50 men living in the hostel were relocated in 2021 as Glasgow moved to shut down all its homeless hostels.

Wheatley Homes Glasgow now plans to create 70 affordable new homes as part of the redevelopment of the former Bellgrove Hotel.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets at Glasgow City Council, said: "The council's disposal of the pieces of land in the Gallowgate and Maryhill will allow both the development of new homes in the city and upgraded public realm in an area that has been vacant for some time. We will continue to work with our partners in the city to help deliver initiatives such as these which meet our strategic housing objectives."
