Twist-ending specialist M Night Shyamalan brought the first Glass trailer to SDCC yesterday (July 20), and now he's explained that he always saw Unbreakable as a franchise opener.

Speaking to IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Shyamalan revealed: "When I made Unbreakable, I kind of intended to do three movies. Just in my head, I was thinking to do that.

"It was just such a weird reaction to the movie... It wasn't received well at the time. I just felt hurt, so I moved on. It grew into this moment here where I wanted to make smaller movies, then I made Split and that was the opportunity to come back to it."

The director, whose work also includes Signs and The Sixth Sense, further explained that he feels perhaps Unbreakable could've been too "sombre" for some audience members, plus the fact that the superhero explosion hadn't begun at the time of its release.

However, the film has now gained cult status amongst viewers, which opened the door for Shyamalan to revisit his colourful universe.

James McAvoy, who reprises his Split role in Shyamalan's latest film, has previously spoken about what fans can expect from Glass.

"There's an incredible cast. And, as always happens with [M. Night Shyamalan], it's just a really unexpected and strange turn of events that you wouldn't expect," he said.

"You might think you'd know what's going to go on because you've seen Unbreakable, you've seen Split, but again it surprises."

Glass will be in US and UK cinemas on Friday, January 18, 2019.
