Two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson is set to star in BBC One's upcoming adaptation Elizabeth is Missing, in what will be the actress' first TV role in 25 years.

Adapted from Emma Healey's bestselling novel of the same name, the one-off featuring length episode will see Jackson star as Maud, an elderly woman suffering from dementia who is trying to find her best friend Elizabeth.

On being cast in the role, Jackson said: "Emma's novel and Andrea's screenplay paint the most striking portrait of a woman in the grip of a devastating condition. I am delighted to be making my return to television to play Maud, a character it's impossible not to be charmed and moved by."

Emma Healey also expressed her excitement over the project, writing on Twitter: "Absolutely thrilled. Amazing actress, amazing script, can't wait to see the adaptation. Honoured that it's Maud who will bring Glenda Jackson back onto our TVs."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama added: "We are thrilled that Glenda Jackson is returning to the BBC and will be at the heart of this inspiring and extraordinary tale.

"Andrea Gibb's brilliantly crafted script and adaptation of Elizabeth is Missing explores important themes told through emotion, warmth and humour."

The one-off feature length drama is adapted by Swallows and Amazons writer Andrea Gibb and will begin filming this summer in Scotland.
