Get a glimpse of Charlize Theron's hardcore training for new spy flick

Cape Town – Charlize Theron ups the ante in her new action film Atomic Blonde.

The actress who plays top-level spy Lorraine Broughton performs her own fighting stunts in the movie.

In a clip posted on Instagram we get a behind-the-scenes look at the rigorous training she underwent for the role.

Director David Leith says that she is in top one percentile of actors to do their own stunts.

Charlize further comments that training was intense and that the stunt guys took a lot of hits but thankfully there were no injuries.

During her training Charlize racked up a list of injuries including a twisted knee, bruised ribs and had to undergo dental surgery, she shared with Variety.

The actress graces the cover of the July edition of the magazine.

"I had severe tooth pain, which I never had in my entire life. Having to cut one of the teeth out and root canals, it was tough. You want to be in your best fighting shape, and it’s hard," says Charlize.

Apart from starring in the film Charlize also produced it through her company Denver & Delilah Prods.

The film was a passion project which she spent five years developing after reading the graphic novel, The Coldest City.

She then got screenwriter Kurt Johnstad to develop her character and brought on director David Leith to helm the project.

It was important for her to "break the rules that had been set for women in the genre" with this film.

In the interview she talks about the amount of make-up and prosthetics that were used to show her bruises as opposed to hiding them to maintain an image.
