Meghan Markle should be 'honoured' for banana message to sex workers, says Sarah Ferguson

Sarah Ferguson has defended Meghan Markle after she wrote a message of support to sex workers on a banana.

Last week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid an unannounced visit to the charity One25 in Bristol, which helps street sex-workers.

While helping to prepare food packages for the van, Meghan came up with the idea to inscribe messages of support to the women on the bananas which form part of the parcels.

The duchess wrote on the fruit, in capital letters and often followed by a heart: “You are strong”, “You are special”, “You are brave” and “You are loved”.

The incident sparked accusations that the incident was little more than an empty gesture, with one sex worker due to be handed one of the bananas reportedly branding it “offensive“.

But now the Duchess has received backing from another royal source.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain via video link from Sierra Leone to discuss her charity work for Street Child and Child in Crisis in the African country, Sarah Ferguson said Meghan should be ‘honoured and heralded’.

She said: “Anybody on the public stage, that shines a light, should be honoured and heralded.

“It’s getting the message out there for people to have hope. If we don’t have hope, what have we got?I’ve learnt more from working with children than I have doing anything else, I’ve learnt more humility, and forgiveness for life really.

“I think we can get so wrapped up in certain worlds, but what about opening our eyes to this world?” she concluded.
