Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has admitted that things have "regressed" for her husband Derek Draper as he continues his battle following coronavirus (COVID-19).

Derek contracted the virus nearly a year ago and has been in hospital ever since. Even though the virus has left his body, the damage to his kidneys, heart and other organs has meant that he is still needing intensive care.

Speaking to The Mirror ahead of her documentary Finding Derek airing tomorrow (March 23) on ITV, Kate said that she hasn't been able to see him in person because of the most recent lockdown and that may be one of the reasons why his recovery has slipped.

"Things have regressed a little bit this year since January, but how much that is to do with the restrictions of not being able to visit, is unclear," she said.

"It felt like we were moving forward at Christmas, now it feels like we've slipped back. And I've felt like I'm sort of hanging over the side of a ship, trying to hold onto him, so that when he kind of bobs up from this ocean of unconsciousness, you can see him sort of click in and you don't know whether it's because he can suddenly find a way to get out.

"But he comes up and you feel you have filled him up with as much positivity as possible, 'You're going to be fine. You're going to come home. It's going to be okay.' Even if you don't really know if that's true."

She went on to say: "It will be tough in any circumstance, but because the long-term effects of coronavirus are still so unknown, it's still early days in medical terms. So there isn't enough data available yet to accurately predict his recovery.

"He's at the crest of a really grim wave, and so therefore, at every stage, he's been just before the knowledge."

Last week, Kate spoke about being in "survival mode" constantly, and stated that there was a complicated legal situation meaning she can't even access their joint savings account.

Finding Derek airs tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV.
