Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has been forced to clarify why he is not currently self-isolating after revealing that his son had experienced potential coronavirus symptoms.

Shortly after today's (April 1) edition of the show began, the presenter explained during a chat with a guest that his youngest son had experienced "mild" symptoms recently after he lost his sense of taste and smell.

"One of my sons had it in a much milder way. My youngest boy," he said. "I think most people are associating [lack of taste and smell] with the virus, it's a very unnerving thing to get."

He then added that his son's symptoms "have cleared up now".

The conversation led many concerned viewers on Twitter to question whether Piers had been in close contact with his son and if so why he has not gone into a period of self-isolation for 14 days, as dictated by government advice.

Later in the show, the presenter addressed the controversy head-on to assure viewers that he has not been in direct contact with his son recently and he has not experienced any similar symptoms himself.

He also hit back at those who had criticised him, saying that he hadn't been asked for the full story.

"[My son] was at his mother's house, not mine," he said on air, explaining that he hadn't seen his son for several weeks and so didn't need to self-isolate.

He then criticised those who had written about him without knowing all the facts, saying that if they had asked him directly he could have told them the full story.

Piers' co-host Susanna Reid made her return to the show earlier this week after spending a few weeks in self-isolation at home after one of her children developed symptoms similar to COVID-19.

When she began self-isolating, she admitted how much she would miss work, saying: "I love coming into work, I love the daily battles, I love interviewing, broadcasting all of this to our viewers gives me so much pleasure and I'm really going to miss that for two weeks."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
