Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown makes a discovery that she is definitely not prepared for in a new teaser from Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

The first official footage from the follow-up to 2014's Godzilla teases some of the other terrifying monsters lurking out in the darkness, when young Madison Russell (Brown) tries to contact the monster-catching group Monarch.

Her timing couldn't possibly have been worse because she intercepted the group as they were in the middle of a battle with something.

The high-pitched shrieks bring to mind King Ghidorah, but the creature isn't shown on-screen in the 20-second teaser. A longer clip could premiere this weekend at Comic-Con International.

Director Michael Dougherty's sequel will centre around Madison and her scientist mother Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) being kidnapped by another shady group, bringing them into contact with Godzilla.

King of the Monsters will also expand the universe by introducing classic movie creatures Mothra, Rodan and "his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah", according to the official synopsis.

The filmmaker teased Rodan's significance as well: "In a lot of ways, he's more powerful than Godzilla. He's like this winged A-bomb. I think we've done him justice."

Dougherty also recently confirmed that King of the Monsters will definitely have "some bread crumbs" referencing Kong in order to set up Godzilla vs Kong, which begins production later this year.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which also stars Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler and Charles Dance, opens on May 31, 2019.
