Gogglebox Ireland has paid tribute to one of its former cast members following the sad death of Paul Roche.

Roche, who appeared alongside his friend John Paul Healy on the reality series, passed away earlier this month.

A notice on RIP.ie confirmed that the Gogglebox Ireland favourite died "unexpectedly" at his home on Tuesday, November 16. He was laid to rest in Callan on Monday (November 22).

Current Gogglebox Ireland star Neal Tully – who has been part of the show since its first series along with his twin brother Fergal – said he was "very sad" to learn of Paul's death.

"Very sad to hear of the passing of Paul Roche,1 of the 2 Paul's from season 1 and 2 of #goggleboxirl. Both have been taken," he tweeted. "RIP Paul".

Virgin Media Television, the channel that airs the Irish version of Gogglebox, paid tribute to Paul in a separate post on Instagram.

"VMTV are saddened to hear of the passing of former #GoggleboxIRL favourite Paul Roche Pictured here on the left with his late great pal (John) Paul Healy," they wrote.

"One part of the affectionately known duo 'The Two Pauls', Paul was a brilliant member of the cast through series [one and two]. Our condolences are with Paul's family and friends at this sad time."

The 'two Pauls' appeared on the first two series of Gogglebox Ireland after forging an unexpected friendship, with the pair bonding over a shared love of music. Despite an age gap of over 20 years, the friends grew close after meeting at Paul Roche's shop and met regularly to catch up and watch the telly together.

The UK version of Gogglebox has recently lost some of its own stars, with Mary Cook, Andy Michael and Pete McGarry all sadly passing away this year.

Gogglebox airs on Friday nights at 9pm on Channel 4.
