Gogglebox star Andy Michael dies aged 61

Gogglebox star Andy Michael has passed away aged 61.

The star, who had appeared regularly with his family since the show's inception, died after a short illness Channel 4 and Studio Lambert announced in a statement on behalf of his family.

"We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Gogglebox star Andy Michael at the age of 61 following a short illness," they said. "Andy passed away last weekend with his family by his side.

"Retired hotelier Andy, who brought much wit and insight to Gogglebox, was one of the show's original cast members, appearing in the very first episode in 2013.

"Beloved father to Katy, Alex, Pascal and Louis, and cherished husband of Carolyne, Andy was a much-loved and respected member of the Gogglebox family, and he will be very sadly missed.

"Our love and thoughts are with Carolyne and the entire family. The family have asked for privacy at this very sad time."

The Michael family made their debut on the Channel 4 show back when it started, and have appeared in all series bar the fifth, which they sat out when Andy decided to stand for UKIP in the general election, with his political ambitions deemed a conflict.

"Any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox," Channel 4 said at the time, though the family returned to the show after his failed candidacy.

The sad news comes after it was confirmed earlier this week that Gogglebox's Mary Cook had passed away aged 92.

Mary was well-known for appearing on the series alongside best friend Marina, Gogglebox saying that she "will be sorely missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew".
