Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Gogglebox stars were moved by Maxine Minniver’s storyline on Hollyoaks in tonight’s (November 11) episode.

The character, who is played by Nikki Sanderson, suffered a terrifying and violent attack earlier this week when returning home after a night out.

As the stars of Gogglebox gathered around their televisions, they were left emotional by Maxine’s powerful arc, which serves as a damning indictment of society’s reactions to violence against women.

As she is walking around looking for a route home, Maxine is catcalled by drunk men in the streets. Gogglebox's Daniella revealed this to be the part of a night out that she “cannot stand”, with Tremaine saying: “Blokes don’t realise what that sort of behaviour does.”

As Maxine searched for the quickest route to the bus stop, Dave commented on the “horrible position” women are forced into, while Sophie described the scenes as “upsetting” as she’s been through a similar experience.

As Maxine was stalked and then attacked by her assailant, the viewers were left uncomfortable by the graphic scenes, prompting a discussion about wider society and its view on violence. “That is so unfair, and that’s lot of women’s reality,” said Marcus, while Pete asked: “What the f**k are blokes doing?”

As Maxine reported the crime at the station, a tearful Danielle praised the representation while offering a call to action, saying: “A lot of women wouldn’t do that, they would be cowering and crying and leaving it too long.”

Jenny referenced this, exclaiming: “This is what happens; they blame themselves and they don’t need to. It doesn’t matter how you’re dressed,”, a sentiment echoed by Sophie and Georgia. “It’s definitely the men that have to change; it’s nothing that a woman does, or how she dresses or acts. It’s down to a man’s choice off his own back,” said the latter.

Elsewhere in the episode, the stars watched Alexander Armstrong in South Korea, Queens for the Night and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

Gogglebox airs on Friday nights at 9pm on Channel 4. Hollyoaks streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
