The nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes have been announced ahead of the star-studded ceremony, which will take place in January.

British stars including Olivia Colman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jodie Comer and Helena Bonham Carter are among the British stars nominated in major categories.

Colman and Bonham Carter received nods for their royal performances as the Queen and Princess Margaret in Netflix's The Crown.

Emmy winner Comer will compete against Colman in the Best Actress in a TV Drama category, which also features Jennifer Aniston and Big Little Lies co-stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Netflix put in a strong showing, thanks to the dominance of its film contenders Marriage Story, which received six nominations, and The Irishman, which received five. The streaming service also grabbed 17 TV nominations, thanks to the success of The Crown and hard-hitting miniseries Unbelievable.

Tim Allen, Dakota Fanning and Susan Kelechi Watson were on hand to reveal the nominations on Monday afternoon.

The 77th annual ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton in California on January 5, 2020 and will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

The British comedian will take to the stage for the fifth and final time, having previously presented the awards from 2010 to 2012 and again in 2016.

Tom Hanks will be honoured with the Cecil B DeMille Award, which is handed out each year to recognise "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment."
