Golf fans are convinced Rory McIlroy "hadn't a clue" who Hollywood movie star Tom Holland was during a painfully awkward exchange between the pair.

Spider-Man actor Holland played at this week's BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am at Wentworth, a tournament which features Northern Ireland golfer McIlroy.

Holland introduced himself to McIlroy on the driving range, and even mentioned his name. But McIlroy didn't appear to recognise the silver screen star, replying: "Hello Tom, how you doing?"

There was no mention of Holland's career or work, leading many onlookers to ask if McIlroy even knew who he was talking to.

One said on X: "Rory doesn't know who Tom Holland is."

Another added: "Rory hasn’t got a clue who Tom Holland is. Not a bad swing though!"

One said: "Not sure Rory realises who it is."

Many added that Holland should have just introduced himself as Spider-Man.

McIlroy is hoping to bounce back from his Irish Open nightmare, when he bogeyed two of the final four holes to lose out to Rasmus Hojgaard at Royal County Down last Sunday.

He enjoyed a decent opening round at Wentworth, posting a five-under-par 67 to sit one shot off the lead.
