  • The Good Doctor season 3 episode 16, "Autopsy," airs on ABC on Monday night.

  • In last week's dramatic episode, Carly officially broke up with Shaun.

  • In a new interview, Jasika Nicole (who plays Carly) opens up about fan reactions to the Shaun/Carly/Lea love triangle, the season 3 finale, and more.

The Good Doctor fans were handed a bombshell last week when Dr. Carly Lever broke things off with Dr. Shaun Murphy after weeks of uncertainty in their relationship. Shaun's friendship with his roommate (and former crush), Lea, had been getting in the way of their romance for some time, but it wasn't until Carly saw Shaun and Lea together at karaoke one night that she decided that it was in both of their best interests to break up.

So, heading into episode 16 on Monday, The Good Doctor fans are understandably anxious to find out what's next for the three members of the show's most talked about love triangle. (Especially because, at the end of episode 15, Carly told Shaun he "has to" tell Lea how he feels. Oh, man.) But regardless of your opinion on whether Carly or Lea is better for Shaun romantically, The Good Doctor star Jasika Nicole — who plays Carly on the show — wants you to be considerate of how you talk about these two important women in Shaun's life.

"I think one of the frustrating things I've learned being a part of this show is that...when people are shipping two characters and they want to see them together in a relationship romantically, they have a tendency to basically denigrate the other character who might be in the love triangle," Jasika admitted in an interview with Good Housekeeping. "I don't think that you have to pit them against each other, even if you openly want to see him with one character. That has been a really strange aspect of seeing this love triangle unfold."

Personally, Jasika says she can see either Carly or Lea ending up with Shaun in the long run. ("I understand why Shaun is attracted to both of them," she divulges.) But no matter what's going on with Shaun's love life by the end of season 3, The Good Doctor fans should keep in mind that the show will be returning with a fourth season next fall: It was renewed by ABC just earlier this month.

As the show continues on (and with Carly's relationship with Shaun behind her — for now), Jasika hopes Carly will really be able to come into her own and form stronger relationships with some of St. Bonaventure's other residents.

"So far, we really only know Carly through the lens of Shaun," Jasika explains. "I am really excited and hope to see Carly interacting with other people in the cast outside of that dynamic and learning more about her with other people. I love it when write scenes with Carly and Morgan. Those women, in particular, are such an interesting pair."

(She'd also love to see more of Carly and Lea together, maybe even without the "middle man" of Shaun. We can't help but agree with her on that one.)

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, however, there are four more episodes remaining in the current 20-episode season of The Good Doctor — including what's set to be an epic finale. Not even Jasika knows what'll happen afterward, but she's confident that the season 3 cliffhanger will have fans buzzing until the show returns next fall.

"The season finale is going to really blow people's minds," Jasika reveals. "It's going to be big, and it's going to have people talking over the whole entire hiatus."

Gulp. We're not ready!
