Good Girls season 3 spoilers follow.

Comedy drama series Good Girls has returned to Netflix for a much-anticipated third season. Following suburban moms Beth (Christina Hendricks), Ruby (Retta) and Annie (Mae Whitman) as they lead a life of crime after becoming involved with a notorious drug lord and his gang, the trio face a brand new set of challenges.

Rio has returned following season two's shooting and there's a new detective on the scene (Lauren Lapkus) who's beginning to close in on the girls' operations. But despite the hurdles, Beth and Ruby are still trying to hold it together for the sake of their families and everyone else who has been inevitably dragged down by their felonious talents.

The same cannot be said for Annie, who is yet again left behind. With her personal life in tatters, Annie reverts back to the bad habits we have seen her engage in since the beginning; obsessing over unobtainable men, making terrible decisions and trying to find the easiest way out.

Towards the start of the season, Annie begins to attend therapy sessions with Dr Josh Cohen (Rob Heaps) and while this could have been a great way for her to grow and learn from her past mistakes, she does the only thing she knows how to do – emotionally attach herself to him to the point of attempting to manipulate a break up between him and his fiancée.

These sessions would have been the ideal opportunity to work on her issues surrounding commitment but instead, she spends a good chunk of the season making advances at Josh despite his rejection and who for the most part – one session involved beer and pizza which is not generally part of traditional therapy – maintains a strict doctor-patient relationship.

When Annie learns of Josh's complicated sex life with fiancée Lila, she purposely tries to make him jealous by talking in very intimate detail about her complicated relationship with ex-husband Gregg, as sleeping with him is the very reason why she's in therapy in the first place. Gregg now has a new wife and a baby, but stooping to a new low Annie lures him to her home under false pretences and tries to seduce him one last time. The reasoning? "It's for therapy".

The situation with Josh is putting a strain on her relationship with son Ben, who himself plays more of a parent role as he is often seen lecturing Annie on her constant flings and her perpetual need for validation.

He takes it upon himself to visit Josh to ask him what his intentions are with his mother, explaining that once Annie realises there is no chance of any romantic involvement with him, she will enter into a state of depression and neglect Ben as she has done several times in the past.

There does seem to be a glimmer of hope for Annie as after saving Ruby's life following a shooting, she can be seen researching how to become an emergency medical technician. Annie may have found her way, finally taking charge and wanting to better her life but, of course, she wants to take the easy option – the only reason she doesn't is that she's lacking the funds to be able to fake her way to a diploma.

From here, Annie decides the only thing to do is to quit but Ben, taking more authority and again playing the parent role, forces her to cram in a last-minute study session. The day of the exam arrives and she fails but at least she tried in the end. It just would have been nice to have seen Annie take charge of her own life, study hard to earn her diploma and end the season on a high, stepping away from the life of crime that she so obviously doesn't want to be a part of.

Beth has resolved her issues with Dean and has come to an agreement with Rio while Ruby continues to make things work with her family. Annie is always seen tagging along and acts more of a detriment to the group, distracted by her own personal issues and not really understanding the severity of the wider issue: staying on the gang's good side.

Although by the end of episode 11 we see a semblance of growth, Annie's arc with Josh has enhanced her need for attention and the carelessness of her decisions which often put her needs above those of her own child. We could have seen so much more from Annie this season but as we await the fourth instalment of Good Girls, we can only hope that she will finally get the story she deserves.
