Good Morning Britain viewers were very nearly denied their daily fix this morning (July 28), after the programme experienced a "massive power cut" before going on air.

Fortunately, Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway made it onto our screens in time, with the studio rectifying the major tech fail ahead of its 6am start time.

Ben opened the show by welcoming audiences to "a programme that very nearly didn't make it". Co-host Kate added: "We are here by the skin of our teeth."

Explaining what had been going on behind the scenes in the small hours, Kate revealed there had been "all sorts of dramas" when power in the studio disappeared.

"When I arrived at the studio... they couldn't use the printers to print off any briefs to brief us on the stories," she told viewers. "They had no lights."

As well as there being no hairdryers (god forbid), the power cut forced off the air conditioning, leaving everything – including the all-important server – to over-heat.

Elsewhere, in other GMB news, Sean Fletcher was recently confirmed as one of Piers Morgan's temporary replacements on the breakfast show.

Adil Ray and Ben have already been filling in for Piers while he and Susanna Reid take their summer break, with Sean set to join the rota next month. Charlotte Hawkins and Kate have also been keeping Susanna's seat warm.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
