Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan has vowed to take a year off during a tirade against Ant McPartlin, who took a break from TV following his rehab stint to tackle his alcohol issues and drink-driving car crash.

Speaking ahead of tonight's National Television Awards ceremony, Piers lambasted the I'm a Celeb and Saturday Night Takeaway host over his nomination in the Best Presenter category, despite being away from screens for much of the last year.

The Best Presenter gong at the NTAs has famously been picked up by the presenting duo 17 times in a row so far.

Speaking to his GMB co-host Susanna Reid, Piers said: "Sorry, but how did that happen? Dec, sure he's put a shift in. Us? Hundred of days at the coalface every morning.

"Imagine if Ant McPartlin actually wins tonight and we don't. Walking the dog for a year, television personality of the year. Me. Coalface. Every morning, hours on end, week after week. Nothing. Not a dickie bird.

"Imagine, Britain, if you think that is a reasonable way to conduct the awards season business. If it is, I'm taking next year off, I'm going to walk my dog. I don't even have a dog, but if I did have a dog, I would take it for a long walk everyday in the expectation the British public would then vote for me, as presenter of the year, for dog walking.

"I intend to do that, if I can find a dog. I'll borrow my mother's dog. My son's actually – they have a dog, named after Conor McGregor."

Elsewhere in the show, Piers fumed after he saw the GMB team had been placed further back in the seating behind Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, as he assumed this means the ITV show won't win at tonight's ceremony.

"We're in Siberia, I can't believe that. Why would ITV with their own awards show put a rival network in the front row? And us out the back?

However Piers was soon placated, when he was told there's a chance the team could still win because they NTAs might want them to be filmed doing a long winner's walk to stage.

He added: "I'm now being told the reason that we're further back is so the director can get a longer shot of us on our triumphant victory march."

"There's no point just hopping on stage is there?" added Susanna.
