It looks like we're finally going to see a live-action Dick Grayson in the DC Extended Universe.

Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment are in the early stages of developing a Batman spinoff based around Nightwing, the heroic identity of Bruce Wayne's very first ward Dick Grayson.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studios will turn to The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay to bring a script from The Judge screenwriter Bill Dubuque to life.

Dubuque has a connection to the current Batman actor Ben Affleck, having written Ben's sleeper hit crime drama The Accountant last year.

Affleck himself was involved in the other big DC news of the day when Warner Bros confirmed that Cloverfield's Matt Reeves will direct him in the solo Batman movie.

In terms of Dick Grayson, he is probably most recognisable as Batman's first partner and the first teen hero to wear the Robin costume. Dick would later break off on his own to become Nightwing as an adult.

The DC Extended Universe made reference to Robin in a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scene where the Dark Knight came across his fallen partner's suit in the Batcave.

It was later revealed in Suicide Squad that Harley Quinn killed that version of Boy Wonder - although many believe it was actually the later Jason Todd incarnation of Robin who actually died.

Chris O'Donnell and Burt Ward both famously played Dick Grayson over the decades in Batman Forever and the '66 TV series respectively - and there was briefly a Teen Titans TV series in the works that would have featured Nightwing.

The Batman family characters are currently being mined for multiple DC Entertainment movies - a Suicide Squad sequel, the Harley Quinn-centric Gotham City Sirens and a Deadshot solo movie are all in development.
