The creator of The Good Place has finally answered a debate that's been burning on the internet since October: why is Chidi so buff?

The debate started after episode five of the show's third season, which featured a scene where Chidi (William Jackson Harper) was soaked by sprinklers and had to remove his shirt, revealing his unexpectedly swole body.

The reveal had some fans wondering if it was possible that a person with Chidi's personality traits (indecisiveness, anxiety) would be able to make it to a gym and follow an intense workout routine.

But according to the show's number one authority, creator Mike Schur, it's entirely possible.

"Our internal logic is that his constant anxiety burns a lot of calories, and also that at some point someone was like, 'You know, exercise is a good way to alleviate stress', and he started doing push-ups and never stopped," Schur told Rolling Stone.

Season three of The Good Place ended in January and the show has been renewed for a fourth season, with Schur previously teasing some big twists in the future.

"In a way we are [returning to season one] by design but there are some key differences. In this case, there's only one person who won't remember what is going on," Schur said in January.

"There's a lot of different power dynamics and stuff. The idea is always to change everything and somehow still do the same show that everyone has been watching."

The Good Place airs on NBC in the US, with episodes premiering a day later on Netflix. You can also catch it on E4 in the UK.
