There's sadly only one more season of The Good Place left, but it sounds like the final run will still offer some fresh ideas.

The first three seasons have pretty much exclusively followed the journeys of the original six main characters – Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), Jason (Manny Jacinto), Janet (D'Arcy Carden), and Michael (Ted Danson) – but things will change slightly for the fourth season.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Michael Schur revealed that new "fairly permanent" characters will be introduced, rather than characters who swing by occasionally.

"We've had a lot of wonderful guest stars, like Jason Mantzoukas playing Derek or Maribeth Monroe playing Mindy St Claire," he said. "There are people in the world who pop up and then they come back and they come back.

"But this year, there are new additions to the world who are fairly permanent – at least for the initial status quo. That was a new thing for us.

"We'd never really had characters besides the main six who we were juggling week to week, and now we have a bunch of new ones. So that's the biggest change about this season."

The decision to end The Good Place after four seasons was a creative one.

In a statement last week, Schur said that four seasons "was the right lifespan" and added: "We don't want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant."

The Good Place airs on NBC in the US, with episodes premiering a day later on Netflix. You can also catch it on E4 in the UK.
