Google CEO Sundar Pichai received $200m compensation last year

Google's chief executive officer Sundar Pichai received a $200m (£154m) compensation package for 2016, double of what he got a year before that.

According to a regulatory filing on Friday (28 April), most of Pichai's compensation came from stock awards. He received 99.7% of his annual compensation in equity and 0.3% in salary.

Google's parent company Alphabet gives large equity awards to its top executives including Pichai and the company's chief financial officer Ruth Porat, according the Wall Street Journal.

Last year, Pichai received a salary of $650,000, compared to $652,500 in 2015.

Alphabet co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were paid a symbolic $1. The compensation of Alphabet's executive chairman Eric Schmidt dropped by 46% to $4.3m, down from more than $8m in 2015 when he got a $6m bonus. Porat's pay increased 26% to $39m, up from $31m.

Google has built the world's largest advertising business and is expanding into new forms of advertising like mobile search and automated ad buying.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's compensation totalled $27.4m last year. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mayer's salary was $1m.

Like Pichai, most of her 2016 compensation comes from stock awards, valued at $11.3m and options awards valued at $13.3m.
